The starting point for this 12 metres high sculpture was Picassos just 72 cm large model created in 1957. In collaboration with the Centre Pompidou in Paris and restorers, many years of material testing were carried out in order to ensure that the most suitable and durable colour material would come to be used. Great temperature fluctuations, aggressive ultraviolet radiation, strong winds and abrasive ice corns in winter put the material to a tough test.
